A - Abyss
A - the first Jetter and vowel of the Visayan Alphabet ("Abakada"), having only two pronunciations: t:1at of the open vowel sound pronounced like the plain Spanish "a", as in "kami", "kita", and that of the closed or glottal vowel sound, whose pronunciation has no equiva lent in Spanish or English and must be learned by actual experience, as in "dula, "sala", "baba. When the glottal vowel is unaccented, it is indicated by the sign ( ' ) ; when it has an acute accent, it is indi cated by the sign ( "' ). These signs are employed with the rest of the vowels having glottal sound.
